Blankenburg: castle town on the northern edge of the Harz

During this period, impressive palaces, gardens and representative buildings were constructed that still determine the cityscape. During the Second World War, the historic center was largely spared, meaning that many monumental buildings have been preserved.

The Great Castle: a regal eye-catcher

The impressive Great Castle (Großes Schloss) is without a doubt the most important attraction of Blankenburg. This Baroque palace was built on the remains of a medieval castle and served as the residence of the princes of Brunswick for centuries. The castle towers high above the city and offers a beautiful view of Blankenburg and the surrounding forests. Although parts of the complex are still being restored, several areas are accessible to visitors. Exhibitions, tours and cultural events are organized regularly. The Baroque Gardens

Het Kleine Slot is surrounded by a beautiful park and now houses cultural facilities, among other things. Together with the Grote Slot it forms a unique historical ensemble that makes Blankenburg's royal history visible.

The Teufelsmauer

One of the most famous natural attractions in the area is the Teufelsmauer, a spectacular row of jagged sandstone rocks that meanders through the landscape for tens of kilometers. According to an old legend, the devil built this stone wall during a bet with God. Scientifically speaking, the rocks were formed millions of years ago by geological processes, but the mysterious shape still appeals to the imagination. Various walking routes have been set out from Blankenburg along the most beautiful parts of the Teufelsmauer. The Hamburger Wappen and the Großvaterfelsen in particular offer impressive views of the Harz foreland.

Walking in and around Blankenburg

Blankenburg is an excellent destination for hikers. Numerous routes lead from the city to forests, rock formations, castles and viewpoints. A popular walk leads to the ruins of Burg Regenstein. This medieval fortress was largely carved out of the sandstone rocks and is one of the most special castles in the Harz. Visitors can explore the old casemates, living quarters and defenses and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding area. Nature lovers will also get their money's worth thanks to the extensive beech forests, clear stream valleys and well-maintained hiking trails.

Blankenburg is an important junction within the Harzer Wandernadel, the well-known hiking system with more than 200 stamp posts spread across the Harz. There are various stamping stations in the immediate vicinity, including Burg Regenstein, the Teufelsmauer and various viewpoints.
