Goslar: UNESCO World Heritage Site and Historical Treasure Chamber of the Harz

Imperial history

The history of Goslar begins in the 10th century, when rich silver, copper and lead veins were discovered in the nearby Rammelsberg. Emperor Henry II regularly visited Goslar, but especially under Emperor Henry III the city grew into one of the most important centers of power of the Holy Roman Empire. Around 1050, construction began on the imposing Kaiserpfalz, an imperial palace where imperial days were held and important political decisions were made.

During the Middle Ages, numerous German kings and emperors stayed in Goslar. Thanks to the income from mining, the city also developed into a prosperous trading center and joined the Hanseatic League. Although its political significance later declined, Goslar remained an important city thanks to its economic strength. The exceptionally well-preserved historic center is still a reminder of this heyday.

The Kaiserpfalz: symbol of imperial power

Goslar's most famous monument is without a doubt the Kaiserpfalz. This impressive palace is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Germany and forms the historic heart of the city. The large Imperial Hall is richly decorated with monumental murals depicting the history of the German Empire. In addition, the palace chapel, the imperial apartments and various historical exhibitions are open to visitors. Historic city center

The center of Goslar is one of the best preserved medieval city centers in Europe. More than 1,500 half-timbered houses from different centuries determine the street scene. Some buildings even date back to the 15th century. A walk through the narrow streets takes you past colorful facades, historic merchant houses, churches, fountains and attractive squares. Around the Marktplatz there are numerous cafés, restaurants and terraces where visitors can enjoy regional specialties. Nowadays the Rammelsberg is used as a museum and visitor mine. During guided tours, visitors descend into the old mine tunnels and learn how generations of miners worked under difficult conditions.
