Hahnenklee: mountain village with nature, adventure and Scandinavian charm

In the middle of the wooded hills of the western Harz lies Hahnenklee, an atmospheric mountain village that is part of the city of Goslar in the German state of Lower Saxony. The Gustav Adolf Stave Church

Hahnenklee's most famous landmark is without a doubt the Gustav Adolf Stave Church. This special wooden church was built between 1907 and 1908 and is inspired by the traditional stave churches of Norway. With its wooden construction, dragon heads on the roof and richly detailed interior, the church is a striking appearance in the German landscape. The combination of Norwegian architecture and the nature of the Harz makes the building unique. Visitors can visit the church and concerts are regularly organized, where the excellent acoustics come into their own.

The Bocksberg: the recreational heart of Hahnenklee

The 726 meter high Bocksberg is the center of recreational opportunities in Hahnenklee. The gondola lift takes visitors to the top in just a few minutes, where there is an extensive network of hiking trails and mountain bike trails. From the mountain the views over the forests of the Harz are impressive. On clear days even the Brocken and other striking peaks are visible. The Bocksberg is also attractive for families. On the mountain there are play facilities, an adventure park and a summer toboggan run. The long toboggan run into the valley is one of Hahnenklee's most popular attractions.

Walking through the western Harz

Hahnenklee is a true hiking paradise. Dozens of well-marked routes depart from the village through forests, over mountain meadows and along reservoirs. The most famous walking route is the Liebesbankweg. This approximately 7 kilometer long themed route leads around the Bocksberg and features artistically designed benches, each symbolizing a phase of a love relationship. Along the way, hikers enjoy beautiful views and varied nature. The Upper Harzer Wasserregal, the historic water management system of the Harz that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is also easily accessible from Hahnenklee. Walks along old waterways, ponds and locks provide a special insight into the centuries-old mining history of the region.

Mountain biking and outdoor activities

Hahnenklee is one of the most popular mountain bike destinations in northern Germany. There is an extensive bike park around the Bocksberg with routes for both beginners and experienced downhill riders. The gondola lift easily transports cyclists to the top, after which various descents through the forest follow. In addition, there are numerous cross-country routes through the surrounding nature. Nordic walking, trail running, geocaching and horse riding are also among the popular activities in the area.

Winter sports

When the snow falls, Hahnenklee turns into a winter sports village. The ski slopes on the Bocksberg are especially suitable for families and beginners to slightly advanced skiers. Modern lifts ensure comfortable access to the slopes. In addition, Hahnenklee has well-maintained cross-country trails that connect to the extensive network of the Upper Harz. Winter walking and tobogganing are also popular activities. Thanks to snow cannons, the winter sports season is often longer than in many other low mountain regions.

The Kranicher Teich

Right next to the center is the Kranicher Teich, a picturesque mountain lake that was originally created as part of the historic water management system for mining. Nowadays the lake is a popular place for walking, fishing or simply enjoying the peace and quiet. From the banks you have a beautiful view of the Gustav Adolf Stave Church and the surrounding forests. The lake is particularly photogenic, especially in the early morning and during autumn.

The Harzer Wandernadel

For lovers of the Harzer Wandernadel, Hahnenklee is an excellent starting point. There are several stamp posts in the area, including along the Liebesbankweg, the Bocksberg and the historic waterworks. Many hikers choose Hahnenklee as a base to combine several stamp routes.
